Bitumen spraying and prime coat application are now progressing across key sections of Auki Town as the China‑funded road sealing project moves into full swing.
The Ministry of Infrastructure Development confirms that contractor China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation has prepared major stretches for the final asphalt layers, following drainage installation and relocation of utility lines by Solomon Power, Solomon Water and Our Telekom.
Covering 9.2 km from Kwaibala Bridge to Kilu’ufi Hospital, including feeder roads, the rehabilitation is part of the National Transport Plan 2017–2036. The upgraded main road is designed for speeds of 40–60 km/h with 3.5‑metre lanes, while feeder roads will support 20–40 km/h depending on terrain. High‑quality materials, including 50mm asphalt concrete pavement, are expected to provide a lifespan of 10–20 years with proper maintenance.
As major works intensify, local labour engagement has been scaled back. The project is on track for completion in November, when an official handover is planned. The initiative reflects continued support from the People’s Republic of China under the Belt and Road Initiative and the Global Development Initiative, strengthening Solomon Islands–China cooperation.
