Honiara City Mayor Honours PNG’s 50th Independence Anniversary

Honiara City Council Mayor, Hon. Eddie Siapu, has congratulated the government and people of Papua New Guinea (PNG) on their 50th Golden Independence Anniversary during today’s celebration hosted by the PNG-Solomon Islands Association at the Golf Course in Honiara.

The celebration marking a golden chapter in PNG’s history and reaffirming the enduring friendship between the two nations.

Speaking at the event, Mayor Siapu praised PNG’s journey over the past five decades and acknowledged the strong bond shared between the two Melanesian neighbours.

“Papua New Guinea stands tall and proud as it celebrates 50 years of nationhood,” he said. “To this day, our relationship continues to grow stronger and stronger. Solomon Islands looks up to Papua New Guinea as a big brother and has benefited immensely from the support provided by your country.”

The mayor encouraged the PNG community to be proud of their progress and use this milestone as a stepping stone for future growth.

“As you celebrate your history today, your transition, growth and development over the 50 years are significant and should inspire you to build on this success for a more prosperous and safer future,” he said.

Mayor Siapu also highlighted PNG’s natural wealth and investment potential, expressing confidence in the country’s continued success.

“PNG will continue to develop and flourish because of its abundant natural resources and wealth, and its conducive investment environment,” he added.

Members of the Solomon Islands-PNG community during today’s celebration hosted by the PNG-Solomon Islands Association at the Golf Course in Honiara.

He warmly acknowledged the PNG community living and working in Honiara, reminding them that the Solomon Islands is their home too.

“You are welcome to live, work, and enjoy your stay here,” he said.

The mayor further recognized the valuable contributions of PNG businesses in the Solomon Islands, mentioning companies such as BSP Bank, Heritage Park Hotel, Farmset, and BeMobile.

He also highlighted a notable investment by a company owned by former PNG Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill, which is partnering with the Solomon Islands National Provident Fund to redevelop and upgrade the King Solomon Hotel.

“My government or Council is pleased to see such investment and is committed to provide a safe and conducive investment environment in Honiara,” Mayor Siapu said.
