International Nurses Day 2026 was commemorated in Honiara this week, with health officials recognising the vital contribution nurses make to the country’s healthcare system.

The celebration was held under the global theme, “Our Nurses, Our Future: Empowered Nurses Save Lives,” announced by the International Council of Nurses.

Speaking during the event, Japhet Honimae the acting National Nursing Director said the occasion not only honoured nurses in the Solomon Islands and around the world, but also commemorated the birthday of Florence Nightingale, widely regarded as the founder of modern nursing.

Mr Honimae highlighted the important role nurses play in delivering healthcare services, protecting communities and supporting public health despite increasing pressures on health systems globally and locally.

He said that nurses continue to face major challenges including workforce shortages, growing healthcare demands, climate change impacts and the increasing demand for aged care services.

“Despite these challenges, nurses continue to sustain care, protect communities and hold health systems together, often under immense strain,” he said.

He said Ministry of Health and Medical Services used occasion to highlight efforts to empower nurses through education, leadership training, professional development and workforce management.

The celebration highlighted need for stronger support systems, improved working conditions and continued investment in nursing profession to strengthen healthcare delivery across country.

International Nurses Day is observed globally each year on May 12 to recognise the dedication and contribution of nurses to healthcare services worldwide.
