The Solomon Islands celebrated His Majesty Emperor Naruhito’s birthday, reaffirming strong ties with Japan.

Minister Wayne Ghemu highlighted the enduring friendship and cooperation, emphasizing Japan’s role in promoting peace, resilience, and international collaboration. Diplomatic relations, established in 1978, have led to significant development cooperation, with Japan supporting key infrastructure projects like the international airport and seaport, and investing in human resource development.

Japan’s assistance is crucial as the Solomon Islands aims to graduate from Least Developed Country status by 2027. Recent cooperation has expanded to include waste management and sustainable forest resource management, reflecting a shared commitment to environmental stewardship.

The partnership extends to regional engagement through the Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM), supporting sustainable development, climate action, and people-to-people exchanges.

Both nations are aligned in advancing a peaceful international order. Minister Ghemu also congratulated Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on her re-election and acknowledged the growing partnership, highlighting the strong bond between the Solomon Islands and Japan
