THE 7th Pacific Media Summit officially commenced last night with an opening dinner at the Avatele-Liolau Grounds in Niue, bringing together around 80 media delegates from over 10 Pacific Island countries, including representatives from the Solomon Islands.

The event, themed “Charting a Resilient Future: Pacific Media Navigating Press Freedoms, AI & Geopolitical Interests,” was inaugurated by Niue’s Prime Minister Dalton Tagelagi. In his address, Prime Minister Tagelagi expressed gratitude to the delegates for their commitment to attend and highlighted the importance of fostering dialogue on critical media issues.

“Thank you for choosing to be here, and for accepting our invitation,” Tagelagi said. He highlighted the significance of the summit in addressing contemporary challenges faced by Pacific media, particularly regarding press freedom, the impact of artificial intelligence, and the influence of geopolitical dynamics.

Before the summit, pre-summit workshops began last Saturday, setting the stage for discussions that will continue throughout the week. Delegates will engage in sessions focusing on media resilience, the challenges posed by AI disruptions, and strategies to safeguard press freedoms across the region.

PINA President Kora Nou acknowledged the Niue government and its people for their warm hospitality, stating, “Thank you for warmly welcoming us this week.”

Two years ago, Niue was chosen as the host nation at the 6th PINA Summit held in Honiara, Solomon Islands.
