ABEL Muri, a seasoned captain with 21 years of maritime experience navigating the open waters in the Solomon Islands, is calling for improved shipping service delivery in the remote provinces of Makira and Temotu in the country.

Muri believes that a more efficient and reliable shipping service is urgently needed to help boost economic growth and livelihoods in these remote communities in Makira and Temotu.

He highlighted the dire situation where ships infrequently visit the shores of these provinces, primarily due to the distance, which renders traveling east unprofitable for shipping companies.

“This shortcoming has numerous implications. The erratic schedule of ship visits leaves the people of Makira and Temotu Province in a constant state of uncertainty as they wait for the next ship to arrive.

“Additionally, companies that operate in these areas confront tremendous difficulties as a result of the scarcity of goods and services, which drives up prices and adds to the already high cost of living.

“Furthermore, the absence of dependable shipping services makes it extremely difficult for these provinces to take advantage of new opportunities and strengthen their ties to the rest of the country,” he told Sunday Islands.

In light of these pressing issues, Captain Muri makes a strong plea to the newly elected government after this year’s joint elections to give this issue top priority, as it has afflicted the people of Temotu Province and Makira for far too long.

He also emphasized the importance of collective action, urging all stakeholders to collaborate in building a stronger and more connected nation for the benefit of all Solomon Islanders.

In the meantime, the joint elections are set for April 17, 2024, against the backdrop of these difficulties. Captain Muri urged voters to wisely fulfill their civic duty by choosing candidates who show a commitment to bringing about positive change and easing the financial burdens that communities face.

“Solomon Islanders can create the conditions for a better and more prosperous future for everybody by supporting candidates who place a high priority on lowering living expenses and enhancing necessary services,” he said.
