Initial works at the Ahanga Wharf project in Rennell Bellona Province, part of the broader Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP), continue to advance steadily.

Since the landing of the contractor China Civil Engineering Construction Cooperation (CCECC) on this Polynesian Outlier last month, they have made progress with the setting up of their camp facility.

The campsite, which is located in close proximity to the project site at Ahanga Beach, includes accommodation, office space, storage areas, and supporting utilities such as water, communication, and power supply.

They also set up security measures around the camp, ensuring safety for workers and protection of equipment and materials.

Locals were engaged in this early stage as general laborers, securities, and other duties.

The Community Advisory Committee for the project was also supportive in this initial work, and they continue to liaise with MID’s Safeguards Team to iron out issues related to land and social dimensions.

Given the peculiarity of the tasks ahead, additional skilled staff will be sourced from Honiara to meet the project’s specialized requirements, ranging from operators, welders, concreters, masons, carpenters, and steel fixers.

The project is expected to be fully completed by July 2026.

MID is working closely with the LMCP-engaged Construction Supervision Consultant (CSC) to oversee the execution of this project along with the Honiara Port upgrade and Kira Kira wharf.

This maritime project, supported by funding from the Asian Development Bank and the Solomon Islands Government, highlights the government’s commitment to enhancing national transport infrastructure—critical for economic and social development in the nation’s rural and remote areas.
