88 new COVID-9 case was diagnosed in the last 24 hours from 8 am Yesterday to 8 am today morning.

Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare in his address this afternoon said of the total 343 samples tested, 88 came back positive for COVID-19

This has now increased the country’s total COVID positive cases to 169.

Prime Minister Sogavare said that while distributions of where in Honiara these positive cases were from is still being compiled, it is important to noted that some positive cases are from samples sent in from the Good Samaritan Hospital.

“So far, all these cases are linked directly to passengers and crew that arrived in Honiara from Ontong Java on 10th January 2022 on Marine Vessal, MV Awka,” PM Sogavere stressed.

He said that most of the passengers remained in Honiara and some have moved to the GPPOL and Foxwood area and others Aruligho while some of the passengers have travelled to Western Province, Malaita and Makira provinces.

PM Sogavare further reiterated that it is extremely important that the Ministry of Health can contact and see all the 44 passengers that arrived in Honiara, on MV Awka on 10th January 2022.

“If any member of the public has interacted with any of these 44 people, it is possible you might be infected with COVID-19. And you can infect many other people you meet and speak with or stay with.

“I asked all passengers that arrived in Honiara from ontong Java on MV Awka on 10th of January 2022. Please call the Minister of Health on numbers 115 and 25256 to report where you are, remain in the house you currently staying in, self isolate and do not leave the house. You have been exposed to COVID-19, wait in the house for the health team to come and see you for assessment and testing.

“If you are an owner of a house that hosts a passenger that arrived in Honiara from Ontong Java on 10th January 2022, and have not yet seen a health official, please inform health immediately on numbers 115 and 25256, the traveller has been exposed to COVID-19 on the vessel.

“To members of the public, if you know of any person that arrived in Honiara from Ontong Java on MV Awka on 10th January 2022, please inform the health department immediately on numbers 115 and 25256.
