IN the Solomon Islands, many students face a significant challenge in accessing the technology that could enhance their learning experiences, Dr. Patricia Rodie, Dean of the Faculty of Education and Humanities at the Solomon Islands National University (SINU) said.

Dr. Patricia shed light on this issue during a panel discussion at the International Education Day 2025 celebration.

She stressed that despite the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education, many schools in the country still lack access to necessary technology, including devices, internet, and resources to fully embrace AI-powered education.

Dr. Rodie noted that infrastructure issues, such as limited internet connectivity, high costs, and unreliable power supplies in some regions, are major barriers.

While rural areas are particularly affected, there have been ongoing efforts to improve digital access through partnerships with international organizations. Mobile networks are expanding, and digital literacy programs are being introduced. Although the progress is slow, these initiatives are helping pave the way for better technology access.

“Many rural areas, in particular, are not well-connected, which hinders education, business, and access to information. Additionally, power supply in some regions can be unreliable, which affects the use of technology,” she said.

Despite these challenges, Dr. Rodie remains hopeful, recognizing the immense benefits AI could offer.

She believes AI has the potential to transform education in the Solomon Islands, providing greater access to resources, enriching learning, and supporting teachers. For the students of the Solomon Islands, the journey toward technological inclusion may be challenging, but it is one that promises brighter possibilities for their educational future.
