PERMANENT Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Human Resources, Dr. Franco Roddie has urged teachers throughout the Solomon Islands to remember their passion as primary educators in the country.

Addressing teachers’ celebration this year’s world teacher’s day on October 5 in Honiara, Dr. Roddie saluted school teachers and administrators in the country for how much they have contributed to human capital development in the country, however, he challenged them to continue performing their duties and responsibilities with the passion to transform the education system of the country.

Dr. Roddie said that the celebration of World Teachers’ Day, particularly this year, holds a profound message that expresses the state of education in the country, as the theme for World Teachers’ Day 2022 is “The transformation of education begins with teachers.”

He said that the urgency and responsibility of his ministry of education and human resources are to provide training for teachers to develop items to allow interpreting of information, critical thinking, and problem-solving.

“On critical thinking, we are doing enough perhaps but we need to step up effort so that when you teach the children under your care you can be able to incorporate concepts and activities that would challenge your students to become critical thinkers.

“On problem-solving, of course, we are good problem solvers but how can we promote our kids to become better problem solvers and self-starters on what to do,’’ he said.

Dr. Roddie also reiterated that there should be time to reflect on how well you (teachers) have been teaching.

“Because if you look at the years that you have been teaching, you are in the teaching workforce simply because you love the children that you teach to make a difference in their lives.

“I like to leave you with a challenge, continue to love your job, and continue to be passionate, because it is you who can transform our education system as well as create a country and people that we want.

“The very reason for being ended up in the classroom and spending most time is simply because of our children,” the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Human Resources added.
