HONIARA City Council (HCC) Law Enforcement Officers have carried out a significant demolishing operation targeting illegal markets within the city. The operation, which took place recently, saw the demolition of betelnut markets at Mamana Water, Fijian Quarter, and Whiteriver 01 bus stop.
Law Enforcement Director Robert Madeo emphasized the commitment of his division to maintaining order and legality within Honiara. “Our operations aim to ensure the city remains clean and safe for all residents. We will continue to target and demolish illegal markets along the streets of Honiara City,” he stated.
He also thanked the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) and its Central Response Unit (CRU) team for assisting law enforcement officers during the operations.
The recent demolitions are part of a broader strategy by HCC to address the proliferation of unauthorized markets, which have been a persistent issue in the city. These markets often have congestion, unsanitary conditions, and can attract criminal activities, posing a risk to public health and safety.
Residents and business owners in the affected areas have been urged to cooperate with law enforcement efforts. Madeo reiterated that there are designated areas for market activities and encouraged vendors to utilize these spaces to avoid future disruptions and potential penalties.
