CALVIN Kenton Taro, who will be contesting the West Makira Constituency parliamentary seat in the 2024 Joint Election under the Kadere Party, expressed his belief in the party’s role as a beacon of hope for the communities and country as a whole.
Emphasizing the Kadere Party’s theme of “Economics and Governance Transformation”—its two important key redirection policies—Taro highlighted the critical need for reform within the Solomon Islands governance structures.
Taro noted that the challenges faced by the Solomon Islands are primarily rooted in issues of governance rather than external factors such as foreign relations, donor partnerships, or investment.
He stressed the necessity of addressing governance deficiencies as a means to unlock economic potential and foster self-reliance.
Referencing the words of the late father of the nation and prime minister for three spells in the 1980s and 1990s, Solomon Mamaloni, Taro quoted: “Solomon Islands is conceived and not yet born,” suggesting that despite 45 years of independence, the nation still relies heavily on external support for survival.”
Taro emphasized the urgency of detachment from dependency, advocating for the Kadere Party as the solution to this longstanding issue. One key area of concern highlighted by Taro is the forestry sector, where he pointed out inequities in benefit distribution.
He noted that the current framework disproportionately favors contractors and the government, leaving landowners and resource owners with minimal returns. Taro asserted that the Kadere Party would push for reforms to ensure that landowners regain power and ownership over their resources, he told Sunday Isles.
Furthermore, Taro emphasized the need for comprehensive reform across all government ministries, citing inefficiencies and weaknesses in their current structures.
He proposed that ministries should adhere to guiding principles and advocated for some ministries to be considered non-negotiable in terms of reform.
Taro underscored that these internal issues, particularly those related to land ownership and governance, directly impact the country’s development trajectory and economic prosperity.
He called for robust debate on these matters within Parliament, stressing the importance of addressing them to foster sustainable growth and development.
As the Kadere Party continues to champion these causes, Taro’s statements reflect a growing sentiment for transformative change within the Solomon Islands’ political landscape, with a focus on governance reforms as a catalyst for economic advancement.
Improve West Makira’s Economic Landscape
Taro also outlined his comprehensive vision to address the pressing challenges faced by his constituency of West Makira.
Taro expressed a deep commitment to revitalize the economic prospects of West Makira, emphasizing the pivotal role of agriculture in fostering sustainable development.
“We will strengthen our farmers to optimize the benefits of our abundant resources, thereby creating employment opportunities for the majority of our population residing in villages,” Taro stressed.
Acknowledging the existing hardships encountered by the people of West Makira, Taro highlighted his determination to enhance the delivery of essential services.
“We must improve the current services available to our citizens, empowering them to achieve self-sufficiency and sustainable livelihoods,” he declared in an exclusive interview with Sunday Isles.
Furthermore, Taro stressed the significance of existing governmental programs aimed at supporting the populace, particularly in attaining financial stability.
“Endorsement and financial assistance are essential components of our efforts to uplift the socioeconomic status of our people. As a prospective Member of Parliament for West Makira, I pledge to leverage all available resources to fulfill this crucial goal,” Taro affirmed.
As he gears up for the forthcoming 2024 Joint Elections in April, Taro reiterates his commitment to collaborative efforts with the residents of West Makira.
Contesting under the banner of the Solomon Islands Kadere Party, Taro expressed optimism about garnering increased support from the constituents to realize his vision for a prosperous and inclusive West Makira.
