THE 2024 graduation ceremony at Koloale Community High School in Honiara today transformed into a powerful call to action, made by Honiara City Council Representative Luke Maefiti in his keynote speech.
He noted the critical role of the education community—educators, parents, and students—in shaping the future of the Solomon Islands.
He called on teachers and school leaders to recognise their responsibility in guiding students to realise their full potential and prepare for real-world challenges.
“It is your responsibility to educate every child so that they can recognise their potential and real-world challenges.
“You are special because you win their trust more than the family of where they come from. You will be remembered for your encounters, good or bad,” he noted, acknowledging the unique bond between teachers and students.
Maefiti painted a clear picture of the consequences of neglecting educational duties. Quoting a philosopher, he warned teachers to rise to their calling.
“If new generation educators do not fulfil their obligations properly, then it will form a generation of ignorance, and that will destroy the future of the motherland,” he quoted.
In addition, he urged teachers to lead by example in moral values and personal conduct.
“Your teaching affects eternity. If you want your children to quit smoking, beetle nut chewing, or drinking alcohol, ask yourself, ‘What example are we setting?'” Maefiti challenged teachers.
Turning his attention to the graduates, Maefiti offered advice, encouraging students to harness their time in school to plan for their futures.
“With the influx of technology, my dear students, you may easily drag off, wasting time on Facebook, Twitter, or TikTok. These are fragments of activities that consume time and energy that should be invested in important academic activities,” he warned.
Maefiti also reached out to parents and guardians, reminding them of their crucial role in fostering a positive educational environment.
“Parental involvement begins at home with the provision of a safe, healthy environment, appropriate learning experiences, and support for a positive attitude toward school,” he stated, referencing the Education Act 2023, which highlights the importance of collaboration between families and schools.
Quoting a Nigerian proverb, Maefiti urged all stakeholders—teachers, students, parents, and others—to work together to address the challenges in the education system and ensure a brighter future for the country.
“It takes a whole village to raise one child,” he quoted.
Turning his attention to the graduates, Maefiti offered wise advice, encouraging them to connect their time in school to plan for their futures.
“With technology at your fingertips, it’s easy to get distracted by social media.
“Invest your time in academic pursuits,” he cautioned.
Maeiti later congratulated graduating students, particularly those preparing for national examinations (forms 3, 5, 6, and 7).
He also acknowledged the dedication of the school’s staff and the unwavering support of parents.
“Success demands effort, time, space, and ultimate sacrifice.
“Our goals must be set right. Challenges must be overcome with passion and dedication. For tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today,” he reminded them.
