THE Media Association of Solomon Islands (MASI) completed its election process at the Heritage Park Hotel in Honiara, marking the start of a new era of leadership.
The Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at the Heritage Park Hotel in Honiara on the evening of Saturday, 14 September 2024, marked a significant transition for MASI as members cast their votes to select the new president, vice president, and board member, setting the stage for a renewed focus on the future of the organization and its role in the media landscape.
Ofani Eremae was elected as the new President of MASI, succeeding Georgina Kekea. Joining Eremae in leadership are Lynda Rose Wate Seni, who takes on the role of Vice President, and Robert Iroga, newly appointed as a board member. Eddie Osifelo was re-elected to his board member position, while Jeremy Gwao, Mavis Nishimura Podokolo, and Eliza Kukutu continue their terms on the board.
In his initial address, President Eremae spoke honestly about the challenges the media industry has faced in recent years.
“Over the past four or five years, it has not been easy,” Eremae said. “We’ve encountered numerous difficulties, and there have been doubts about the future of our media.” His comments highlighted the financial strains and a declining advertising market that have impacted local media organizations in the Solomon Islands.
Despite these obstacles, Eremae conveyed a strong sense of optimism.
“I have high hopes for our media,” he stated, highlighting his vision for a revitalized MASI. “I understand that our media industry has faced financial hardships, but I believe it’s time to regroup and work together as a team.”
Eremae’s call for unity was a central theme of his speech. He stressed the importance of collaboration among media professionals and the broader support of MASI’s membership.
“All we need to do is work together,” he stated. “With the support of everyone here and the dedicated board members we have, we are set to take MASI to new heights.”
The election marks a key moment for MASI as it embarks on a new chapter under Eremae’s leadership. With a focus on unity and resilience, the newly elected president and board members are confident to navigate the challenges ahead and raise a more active and collaborative media environment in the Solomon Islands.
