A Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR) team has begun an underwater survey in the Russell Islands today.
The assessment is part of a national effort to evaluate the health and sustainability of key commercial marine species, including coral, trochus, and sea cucumber.
The team, which includes two female officers, will assess 20 sites, focusing on deep-water dives to gauge the health of sea cucumber brood stock.
This survey follows a similar assessment conducted in 2018/2019 and is crucial for proper management of the Solomon Islands’ valuable marine resources.
The team plans to extend the survey to other provinces after completing the Russell Islands.
