THE Ministry of Communication and Aviation (MCA) has announced the successful arrival of new ground handling equipment at Honiara International Airport on 30 July 2024, a key milestone under the Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2).
Funded by the World Bank and implemented in collaboration with the MCA, these additions are set to significantly bolster safety, efficiency, and service quality for Solomon Airlines, the primary carrier operating out of Honiara.
The newly acquired equipment includes a container loader, mobile passenger stairs, two baggage tugs, a golf buggy, a 10ft pallet dolly, and two passenger lifts designed for individuals with disabilities. These assets are expected to streamline airport operations and ensure compliance with international aviation standards.
Sean Te’o, Chief Executive Officer of Solomon Airlines, expressed gratitude for the arrival of these crucial assets, highlighting their essential role in improving service delivery.
He extended sincere thanks to the World Bank for their funding support and acknowledged the collaborative efforts of SIRAP2 and MCA in advancing aviation infrastructure.
Alwyn Danitofea, Permanent Secretary of MCA, emphasized the timely nature of the equipment’s arrival, underscoring the need to replace aging infrastructure to meet modern aviation safety requirements.
With these upgrades, Solomon Airlines is poised to efficiently manage passenger services and baggage handling operations.
The equipment was supplied by Shanghai Cartoo Machinery Company Limited, renowned for its expertise in manufacturing ground support equipment for the aviation industry.
Shanghai Cartoo will also provide comprehensive training for operators and maintenance staff to ensure optimal utilization and longevity of the equipment.
In addition to the enhancements at Honiara International Airport, the broader SIRAP2 initiative includes improvements to Munda International Airport, Santa Cruz (Lata) Airfield, upgrades to bridges in Malaita, and road enhancements in Noro, Western Province.
