CONSTRUCTION of the new Buala Market has created over 50 jobs, giving a strong boost to the local economy as construction progresses.
The new market, constructed by local company Tropic Group Builders, is part of Australia’s push to deliver more economic infrastructure using local companies and suppliers.
The project has created over 92,000 hours of paid work for 55 Solomon Islanders, including 15 from Isabel Province.
Australia’s High Commissioner to Solomon Islands, His Excellency Rod Hilton said more jobs added to family incomes, as well as increasing workforce skills.
“At every Australian-supported worksite, from markets to airfields to health centres, Solomon Islanders are learning new and improved construction techniques to increase the quality and resilience of the infrastructure they’re building, as well as looking after health and safety on site.”
“While workers get ready to start on the Buala Market roof, Australia is making sure that workers are upskilled and stay safe.”
The new Buala Market will increase the market’s capacity to 150 vendors, with a seawall, landing area for boats, and restrooms for everyone including people with a disability.
The project is part of Australia’s provincial markets redevelopment program, which to date has been delivered by a 100 per cent Solomon Islander workforce.
Markets are currently under construction or completed in Tulagi, Malu’u and Honiara, with works soon to commence in Seghe.
The market is progressing despite being hampered by heavy rains over the Christmas period.
Pouring of the concrete seawall is almost complete, while blockwork on the market is well underway.
Vendors are continuing to sell produce at a temporary market house constructed as part of the project.
“We’re looking forward to the completion of the market and the economic boost that will create for Buala and the people of Isabel,” High Commissioner Hilton said.
