Prime Minister Hon. Jeremiah Manele says he is ready to face any Motion of No Confidence that might come. He told local media on Monday that his Government for National Unity and Transformation (GNUT) is strong and has the support it needs.
“Everybody is claiming numbers. I am confident that I have the numbers,” PM Manele said.
He was responding to growing rumours that a third Motion of No Confidence could be coming. However, no official notice of such a motion has been filed with the National Parliament yet.
“You hear a lot of meetings and rumours – that is normal when motions are coming,” he said. “But a Motion of No Confidence is a democratic right of any Member of Parliament. I am prepared to face it.”
PM Manele also spoke about the importance of keeping the country stable. He said leaders need to focus on their shared job of leading the country well.
“Every time there is a motion, we keep the country waiting for months,” he said. “If a new government has to be formed, that takes even more time. It doesn’t send a good message to our people or to investors.”
He added that while motions are part of democracy, they also have serious effects.
“I’m not saying motions should not happen,” he explained. “I just want people to think about how they affect the country’s stability.”
To strengthen his government, PM Manele made some changes in his Cabinet. Rexon Ramofafia has been moved from the Ministry of National Planning to the Ministry of Finance and Treasury. Former Finance Minister Trevor Manemahaga now takes over the Ministry of National Planning.
For now, GNUT continues to lead, with PM Manele confident in his support and focused on keeping the country steady.
