Newly elected Solomon Islands Prime Minister Matthew Wale has called on citizens to unite and prepare for necessary national reforms, declaring that “change is coming” as his government takes office during challenging global and economic times.
In his first official address after being elected Prime Minister, Mr Wale acknowledged the work of previous leaders and governments that contributed to the country’s development, while pledging that his administration would work diligently to serve the people.
“It is a great privilege indeed and an honour to be elected your Prime Minister today. I will not trifle with this privilege and the government that I lead will do its utmost to serve,” Mr Wale said.
The Prime Minister also urged Solomon Islanders to hold his government accountable and reminded leaders that they are servants of the people.
“Please help keep us accountable and responsible. When we act as if we are your lords, please remind us that we are your servants,” he stated.
Mr Wale said his government assumes office at a difficult time as global geopolitical tensions continue to impact economies around the world, including Solomon Islands.
“We are not immune from the impacts of these geopolitical events. Therefore, your government will exercise discipline and prudent management to see us through these difficult times,” he said.
Calling for national unity, the Prime Minister appealed to all Solomon Islanders to remain strong and courageous as the country prepares for major reforms.
“Fellow Solomon Islanders, change is coming. These changes are necessary and may be painful. I ask that you join with your government in putting your hand to the plough. Let us all unite and count the cost of effecting the changes that are necessary to position our country to flourish,” he said.
Mr Wale also delivered a strong message to young people, encouraging them to become active participants in building the nation’s future.
“I appeal to the youth of our country, be ambitious for yourselves and to be part of the growth we want to see in Solomon Islands,” he said.
The Prime Minister also acknowledged the role of faith and prayer in the nation, thanking Christians throughout the country for continually praying for Solomon Islands.
