IMPROVEMENTS to Noro Roads in Western Province have seen significant progress in recent months.
This investment, funded by the World Bank and implemented by the Solomon Islands Government through the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) under the Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2), aims to improve the climate resilience and safety of the region’s critical links that run through a tuna processing plant, Noro International Port, customs, and markets.
The works are being undertaken by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC). All key activities are being closely monitored under the supervision of the Engineer, Egis Asia Company Limited.
So far, all unexploded ordnance surveys and the validation of confirmatory survey works have been completed. Currently, the project team is focused on laboratory equipment installation, material testing and inspection, road alignment setting out, site clearing, pavement milling, and the completion of the laydown area.
To prioritize the safety of both workers and the public, traffic management protocols have been implemented. Drivers are urged to follow traffic signs and adhere to the instructions of traffic controllers to minimize disruptions during this construction phase.
Upon their completion, the upgraded roads will significantly enhance links in Western Province, benefiting residents, businesses, and travellers. The Permanent Secretary of MID, Mr. Allan Lilia, emphasized the project’s importance for the local community, stating: “These roads are critical to the daily lives of Noro’s residents. By improving the quality and safety of the Noro Roads, we are creating smoother access to markets, schools, and essential services. The upgraded roads will also support local businesses and industries, particularly the fisheries sector, by enhancing transportation links for goods and services.”
MID also extended its gratitude to the people of Noro for their patience and cooperation as this vital infrastructure project progresses.
In addition to improvements on the Noro Roads, SIRAP 2 is also constructing four new bridges in Malaita (Kolofe 1, Kolofe 2, Su’u Harbor, and Bira Bridges), upgrading Honiara and Munda Airports, enhancing the Santa Cruz (Lata) Airfield, investing in air navigation systems in Makira-Ulawa and Temotu Provinces, and supporting regional airport maintenance.
