The new market is rising, with blockwork and roof framing on the new amenities building progressing quickly.

Construction of the Australian funded new Seghe Market has passed the halfway mark, with strong progress by local contractor Hatanga on the amenities building and two market house structures.

A team of 25 local workers from Hatanga, including community members from the surrounding area, has completed the foundations, walls and roof framing for the amenities building, with roofing now being installed. Work on the nearby administration building is also progressing well.

Australian High Commissioner Jeff Roach said the project reflects the ongoing partnership between Australia, Solomon Islands and local contractors to deliver improved community facilities that support economic growth.

Over 60% complete! The new market, together with the new Seghe Airfield and terminal projects, are quickly changing the shape and economic future of Seghe.

“Infrastructure is about opportunity. Markets are essential community spaces that support income generation, improved livelihoods and food security,” High Commissioner Roach said.

“Through the Australia–Solomon Islands Partnership, we’re working together to deliver safer, more accessible and more resilient market facilities for the benefit of communities across the country.”

Hatanga Site Manager Edgar Pwaoo said the construction team remains on schedule.

“Teams are working steadily and according to plan,” Mr Pwaoo said.

The new Seghe Market will provide separate spaces for local produce and fish vendors, with capacity for up to 120 vendors, including specially designed low height, wheelchair accessible stalls.

Sustainable features include solar lighting and 56,000 litres of rainwater storage to ensure the site is low-cost to operate and maintain. The market will also include separate toilets and showers for men, women and people with disabilities.

Construction is expected to be completed before the end of the year, including all finishing works and final checks.

Local vendor Hellena Vaelet said the community is looking forward to the improved facilities.

“When the market is complete, we will have a good space to sell our goods—out of the hot sun, and with water, power and toilets.”
