WAIMAPURU National Secondary School breaks through to become the first ever high school to use a Web Application Base School Management System in the Solomon Islands.
As the name implies, the school management system is installed locally in a linux server that can be accessed only within the Waimapuru Network via any internet browser application.
It is one of the latest integrated systems with advanced features that include, Student Management, Staff Management, Hostel Management, Asset Management, Accounting/Finance Management, Timetabling Management, and a front end Website.
With the implementation of the School Management System and whilst classes have already commenced, staff are accessing the system to consult their timetable using their own accounts.
According to Mr. Donald Vahimana, the timetable master, the manual system of creating a timetable use to take him about three to four weeks before completing it.
He said that in addition to this, he had to wait for about a week for feed backs from the teachers for errors before he could finalize the timetable.
However, with the automated system in place, he had managed to create the school timetable within a week.
Apart from this, staff can access their timetable anywhere within the school vicinity from their mobile devices. Students can also access the timetable from the front end of the School Management System which is like a website.
Students’ application and admission is now currently being migrated into the system.
The Manageress School Service of Waimapuru, Gladys Siale and the Chief Education Officer for Makira/Ulawa Province, Gilbert Tabihau on their recent visit were impressed with the progress of the school development in terms of their approach, development and advancement into technology.
Sunday Isles was informed by Gladys that this School Management System may not only boost the school management but also the management of schools by Education Authorities in the country once given the access to the system.
The School Management System is developed and implemented by Umi Solomons trading as You Invest. Umi Solomons have been developing other systems and is proud to be the web developer and designer for Isles Media Enterprises.
The Managing Director of Umi Solomons told Sunday Isles Media that the project is only 5% into the implementation stage. There are a lot of rooms for improvement. As time goes, the system will be accessed outside the Waimapuru network and staff, students and parents can actually benefit from it.
It is an advanced tool and just like any other tools, it depends on the users to utilize it. How well the system will work depends on the users themselves.
