TOROIWANGO Community High School in West Makira launched its inaugural walkathon fundraising drive towards the completion of their school infrastructure on August 13, 2023.
The 2-day walkathon fundraiser with its theme “IF WE CAN WALK IT, WE CAN BUILD saw students, teachers, parents, and local residents coming together to support the construction of their 2-story and 1-block building, housing both an office space on the upper floor and a Year 9 classroom below.
School Principal Karl Manira said the building infrastructure is scheduled for completion in preparation for the upcoming academic year in 2024.
Karl said the fundraising initiative is a crucial step towards fulfilling the school’s vision for enhanced facilities.
“While hardware materials are generously funded by West Makira Constituency (WMC), the community’s backing, in the form of building materials and financial contributions, is pivotal to bringing the project to fruition. At present, the school is well-equipped with the necessary logs for construction, yet it requires additional funds to cover timber cutting and labor expenses.
“The hardware materials are funded by WMC, and the community’s support is through building materials. Currently, the school has the logs to complete the building and needs funds for cutting timber and labor costs,” the school principal added.
Expressing his gratitude, Principal Karl thanked the local communities for their overwhelming support during the walkathon event.
“The success of this event truly reflects the spirit of unity and commitment within our catchment area,” he noted.
Likewise, the principal extended his special thanks to various individuals and groups who played vital roles in ensuring the event’s triumph.
The Member for Provincial Assembly (MPA) in Ward 8, Hon. Douglas Kuper’s support, was also acknowledged, particularly for his contributions towards the meals during the two-day Walkathon event. The Asimanioha community’s hospitality in hosting the event was applauded, with recognition given to Mr. Eddie Masuguria and Mr. Chris Hiri for their outstanding organization. The event’s logistical aspects were well handled, thanks to Leonard Taro’s transportation services and his provision of a generator and music system for the Saturday night programs.
The efforts of Mr. Edward Taro, the Deputy Principal, and consulting colleagues were acknowledged for their unwavering support in realizing the school’s developmental plans. The parents of students from Wainarii, Wango, Mwaniwaro, Waita, and Kakaoragana were commended for entrusting the school with their children’s participation in the fundraising drive.
Meanwhile, Principal Manira shared a quote by John Dewey that resonates deeply with the school’s ethos: “Education is not the preparation for life; education is life,” end of quote.
This ethos has evidently influenced the students’ dedication to their school’s advancement and their active involvement in the fundraising activities. Principal Manira envisioned these young individuals as future leaders who will continue to contribute to the school’s progress and the community’s well-being.
Toroiwango CHS, a newly established school situated in East Arosi, has quickly become a vital education hub in the West Makira Constituency, catering to Year 6 graduates from Asimanioha, Etemwarore, Toroiwango, and Kaokaoragana Primary Schools.
By providing accessible and high-quality education, the school not only meets the educational needs of its students but also offers a reliable and economically feasible choice for parents and community members, ensuring the continuity of basic education for the area’s children.
As the Walkathon event concluded with resounding success, the Toroiwango community stands united in its commitment to building a brighter future for the school and its students. With the foundational values of education firmly established, these young minds are poised to become the architects of change and progress for generations to come.
