The Kukum Area Health Center, funded by the Australian Government and HCC’s Health Division, was handed over to the Honiara City Council with smiles and applause today.
The handover ceremony was attended by key dignitaries including Honiara City Mayor Eddie Kasute’e Siapu, Minister of Health and Medical Services Dr. Paul Popora Bosawai, senior government representatives, and officials from the Australian High Commission. Also present were health workers, including nurses who will soon be working in the new facility.

The ceremony included the key handover from the Australian High Commission, cutting of the ribbon, unveiling of a plaque, and a celebratory cake-cutting. Guests also toured the newly completed health center. The Kukum Area Health Center now stands as a symbol of strong partnerships between Solomon Islands and Australia — and a step forward in delivering accessible, quality healthcare for all.
“This is a remarkable achievement for Honiara City Council,” said Dr. Lawrence Diau, speaking on behalf of the HCC Health Director. “Thank you to the Australian Government for your support. Together, we’ve made this possible.”
The upgraded Kukum Health Center will provide better access to essential health services for communities in Honiara. The modern facilities are expected to ease pressure on other clinics and improve care for thousands of residents.
In his keynote address, Health Minister Dr. Paul Popora Bosawai commended the partnership behind the project.
“This center is a clear example of what we can achieve when we work together,” Dr. Bosawai said. “Our people deserve quality healthcare, and today we are one step closer to that goal.”
Mayor Eddie Kasute’e Siapu also expressed his gratitude to the Australian Government and its Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) for their financial support and collaboration.
“My government is very grateful for the assistance in renovating our Kukum clinic. It will now provide vital services to our people,” Mayor Siapu said.
Representing the construction company, Michael Leung, CEO of Super Construction, said it was an honour to deliver the project.
“We are proud to be part of something that will make a real difference in people’s lives,” Leung said.
