THE Waste Management Division of the Honiara City Council is reminding dog owners to register their pets by May 1st.

During an ongoing roadside awareness campaign in East Honiara today, officers announced that a grace period is in effect until May 1st, during which dog owners can register their pets for $50 per dog and receive a collar from the Honiara City Council (HCC) Waste Management Division, which will include important information such as the dog’s name and tag number.

The HCC is currently distributing pamphlets and raising awareness throughout Honiara City regarding the “Honiara Dog Ordinance.”

After May 1st, the HCC will enforce the Honiara Dogs Ordinance, allowing them to collect and dispose of stray dogs or those without collars or tags that pose a danger or nuisance to the public or individuals.

The Honiara (Dogs) By-Law, passed on June 22nd, 1965, legalized the possession of dogs over six months old within Honiara City.

The By-Law also stipulates that any dog found without a disc or wandering at large in a manner that poses a danger or nuisance to the public or any person will be impounded by the council.

Additionally, individuals who release, injure, or attempt to release or injure any dog detained by the council without lawful authority or excuse will be charged in the Magistrates Court.
