HON. Michael Salini, Premier of Central Province, made a powerful statement on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, calling for greater inclusion and recognition of people with disabilities in all aspects of life.

Speaking in Tulagi on Tuesday, Salini emphasized the need for political, social, economic, and cultural integration, urging communities to uphold the dignity and respect of individuals with disabilities.

He highlighted the importance of the event in promoting the rights of people with disabilities and reaffirmed a commitment to greater inclusion. “Let us recognize and promote the integration of people with disabilities in every aspect of life,” Salini said.

The event, organized by People with Disability Solomon Islands (PWDSI), also celebrated the theme, “Amplifying the Legacy of Patients with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future.”

Salini commended the collaborative efforts of provincial authorities, community organizations, and faith-based groups, while also stressing that more must be done by the government and stakeholders to meet the needs of people with disabilities. He also noted the significance of the event coinciding with the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, acknowledging the additional challenges faced by women and girls with disabilities.

The Premier expressed gratitude to international donors like UN Women and DFAT for funding disability-focused initiatives, which play a crucial role in improving the lives of individuals with disabilities. Reaffirming his government’s commitment, Salini pledged continued support and called on all citizens to renew their efforts in championing the rights of people with disabilities, concluding the event with a unified commitment from all attendees.
