The Solomon Islands officially opened its 48th Independence Anniversary celebrations with a National Thanksgiving Service at St. Barnabas Provincial Cathedral in Honiara on Sunday, July 5.

Held under the national theme “Our Nation, Our Responsibility and Accountability – Building a GREAT Solomon Islands,” the service brought together national leaders, church representatives, government officials, Members of Parliament, and citizens for a time of worship, reflection, and prayer for the country.

Special musical presentations were delivered by the Assemblies of God Women’s Ministry, Adaliue Women’s Ministry, and Advent Echoes, highlighting the central role of churches in the nation’s Independence commemorations.

An intercessory prayer for the nation was led by Rev. John Subu Taunani, while the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force Band guided the congregation in singing the Solomon Islands National Anthem.

A key moment of the service was a national reflection shared by Prime Minister Hon. Matthew Cooper Wale, who delivered a message aligned with this year’s Independence theme—emphasizing responsibility, accountability, unity, and the collective duty of all Solomon Islanders in the ongoing journey of nation‑building.

The National Thanksgiving Service remains a significant event on the Independence calendar, offering a moment for Solomon Islanders to give thanks for the nation’s blessings, reflect on progress since gaining independence in 1978, and pray for peace, unity, and continued development.

This year’s 48th Independence celebrations continue under the theme “Our Nation, Our Responsibility and Accountability – Building a GREAT Solomon Islands,” encouraging every citizen to contribute to strengthening the nation and shaping a prosperous future.
