THE Solomon Star Newspaper had success at this year’s recent Media Association of Solomon Islands Media Excellence Awards 2024, with its two journalists taking home awards.
Solomon Star leading newspaper journalist Uluta Gina was awarded Print Journalist of the Year, while journalist Ms. Assumpta Buchanan won the Court Reporter Award.
Based in Gizo, Western Province, Uluta Gina achieved a new benchmark in his journalism career.
Uluta has always been passionate about storytelling and informing the public. His path into journalism began with humble origins. Graduated with a Media Journalism certificate from Solomon Islands National University (SINU), he embarked on his career through a rough six-month probation at both the country’s leading news outlets, the Solomon Star and Island Sun.
Initially focused on sports journalism, Uluta’s career quickly evolved as he discovered a deep-seated passion for general news stories that spanned local events and national issues.
Reflecting on his early days, Uluta acknowledged the pivotal role played by his mentors.
“I owe a great deal of gratitude to Ofani Eremae, a former editor from Solomon Star, for his mentorship and unwavering support during my formative years,” Uluta told SUNDAY ISLES.
He also acknowledged Solomon Star senior journalist and former Editor Moffat Mamu for invaluable editorial guidance, crucial to refining his craft.
Likewise, he also thanked his senior media colleagues in the industry.
“Eddie Osifelo of Solomon Star and Ronald Toito’ona of In-Depth Solomons have been role models, shaping my reporting style and pushing me to excel,” Uluta said.
However, the cornerstone of Uluta’s journey lies with Deli Sharon Oso, his current editor at the Solomon Star Newsroom.
“She’s the final gatekeeper, ensuring our stories are not just news but truth. Her role has been instrumental in upholding the integrity of journalism in the country,” Uluta said.
Moffat Mamu, a former editor and senior journalist who worked closely with Uluta in Gizo for over two years, praised his achievements.
“From the start, Uluta embraced the complicated challenges of working in the province as a journalist. The geographical vastness of Western Province presented significant logistical hurdles—from limited funding and equipment to sparse connectivity and diverse community dynamics.
“We wear multiple hats. Often covering various beats, which can lead to burnout but also sharpens our storytelling abilities.
“Access to reliable information in rural areas remains a continuous challenge. Building trustworthy contacts and navigating local sensibilities are daily tests of journalistic integrity. It’s about balance—between accuracy and community ties,” he explained.
“He is one of our dedicated young staff who is an all-rounder reporter.
“He covers all sorts of stories in rural communities—from sports and climate change to the struggles of rural vendors and farmers.”
“We are proud that his hard work and commitment have been recognized with this award,” Mamu said.
Mamu added: “Uluta’s passion for digging deep into issues around the province ensures that the voices of rural communities are heard. His recent award is a testament to his dedication and will encourage him to continue his excellent work.”
As of now, Uluta is the only journalist at the Solomon Star news office in Gizo, following Mamu’s relocation to Honiara.
The newsroom team is delighted that two of its reporters have been recognized at the recent MASI Awards night, underscoring the significant achievements of their team.
“Winning the prestigious MASI print journalism award this year marks a significant milestone in my career.
“It’s a proof I share with humility of the impact my work has on the rural community in Western Province.
“The award strengthens my passion for journalism, granting me a broader platform to advocate for pressing issues and effect meaningful change.
“It’s about using this recognition to push boundaries and champion the significance of local journalism.
“This award is not just a milestone but a catalyst for even greater stories and deeper connections, he added.
He expressed his thanks to his senior journalist and media colleagues from the Solomon Star and Media Family for their guidance and mentorship.
“I never thought I could make it this far to win this Print Media Journalist Award of the Year.
“Thank you, MASI, for this event,” he reflected.
