Recently, the 5th China Medical Team to Solomon Islands has successfully carried out a groundbreaking cosmetic-incision surgery to remove a giant breast lipoma from a young Solomon Islands woman, changing her life.

The 27-year-old patient had lived with a growing lump in her left breast for nine years. By the time she sought help at the National Referral Hospital, the mass had reached 23 centimeters across, causing severe discomfort, affecting her daily life, and damaging her self-esteem. She had visited several health facilities before but received no satisfactory solution. When she learned the China Medical Team now includes a specialist breast surgeon, she came for treatment hoping that the Chinese specialist would remove the tumour and preserve her natural appearance.

After careful examination and ultrasound scan, Dr. Zhang Shiyong with the 5th China Medical Team confirmed the large benign tumour was pressing on healthy breast tissue and required urgent removal. “I have never seen a breast mass this large,” said Dr. Jahrad, a local doctor who joined the consultation.

A Precise, Gentle, and Cosmetic Approach.

Dr. Zhang and local medical staff planned a modified minimally invasive procedure using a hidden horizontal incision along the lower breast. The technique ensures complete removal of the tumour while leaving very little visible scarring and maintaining the natural shape of the breast. During the operation, Dr. Zhang operated alongside Dr. Fandry, providing hands-on training to pass on advanced surgical skills to build Solomon Islands’ own medical team. The large tumour was successfully removed, and the patient made a smooth recovery. Dr. Fandry noted that he learned a lot from this new approach in such operations.

 “I Feel So Relieved Now”

“Before the operation, I could only sleep on one side. The lump was so big that it was hard to breathe,” the patient shared. “Now I feel light and free. The doctors have truly changed my life.”

Dr. Zhang Shiyong said the operation prioritized both healing and dignity“This young patient wanted to be healthy and feel confident at the same time. Our cosmetic surgery removes the tumour without leaving obvious marks, helping her recover fully and return to normal life with pride.”

CMC Team leader Dr. Chu Liangzhao described the surgery as a major step forward for local healthcare. “This operation fills a technical gap. We will keep bringing professional care, share our skills, and strengthen the medical and health partnership between China and Solomon Islands.
