Police officers of the National Crime Prevention Department (NCPD) supported by the
New Zealand police under the Solomon Islands Policing Support Programme (SIPSP)
have successfully delivered Mindset Plus training and community engagements in Taro,
Choiseul Province, recently.
A total of 21 RSIPF officers in Taro along with their Provincial Police Commander (PPC)
Superintendent Berry Pogesopa completed the training and were awarded certificates of
attainment.
Superintendent Pogesopa’s leadership and experience have provided valuable insights for
both his senior and junior officers.
The training emphasized key aspects of crime prevention, leadership and team
performance, while also addressing critical issues such as family violence and the role of
the RSIPF in protecting the vulnerable, particularly children.
Participating officers left with a clearer understanding of high-performance policing and the
importance of strategy, culture and values in their work.
Beyond the training, meaningful community engagements took place, including a Supizae
community bylaw review attended by Chief Cornelius Valaka, members of his community,
Superintendent Pogesopa, NCPD officers and SIPSP officers.
The review was an important step in ensuring community by-laws remain relevant and
effective. The gathering demonstrated the strong collaboration between the chiefly system
and law enforcement in Taro. This was an open and fair conversation and each party
added valuable contributions to the proceedings.
Additionally, officers from the RSIPF and New Zealand Police visited Taro Primary School,
where PC James Opa delivered key safety messages on the five drivers of crime, drugs
and alcohol, family violence, youth issues, environment, resource concerns and emerging
issues.
Students listened attentively and showed great respect towards presenters. Crime
prevention messages can have a positive and lasting effect on young students. As a token
of appreciation, the RSIPF presented a small gift to the school.
These initiatives reflect the commitment of the RSIPF and its partners to professional
development, effective policing and meaningful community engagement. Through training,
collaboration and education, the RSIPF continues to strengthen its role in protecting
communities and ensuring a safer future for the Solomon Islands.
