
THE MV Southern Cross successfully completed its fourth and final transport of disaster relief supplies over the last week, delivering more local foods to the people of Port Vila affected by the recent earthquake.
This last shipment, which originated from the islands in the Penama provinces, marks a significant milestone in the relief efforts led by the Anglican Church of Melanesia (ACoM) Vanuatu.
During a handing-over ceremony at the Sinovan wharf this morning, Senior Operations Officer Mr. John Siba presented the final load of supplies to Mr. Timothy Tumukon, the Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Forestry, Fisheries, and Biosecurity (MALFFB) who’s ministry is responsible for distributing the supplies in Port Vila.
In his statement to ACoM media, Mr. Siba expressed gratitude to all stakeholders, both local and international, for their generous contributions, primarily consisting of food items and some non-food essentials.
Mr Siba also acknowledges the Melanesian Mission Trust Board New Zealand (MMTB NZ), Melanesian Mission Trust Board UK and all ACoM Mission partners who have contributed greatly through finance.
Mr.John Siba also acknowledges the Archbishop of ACoM the Most Rev Leonard Dawea, the council of Bishops, the General Secretary, Board members of the MV Southern Cross and all staff and volunteers both from ACoM Office in Solomon islands and Vanuatu for allowing and making all possible for the vessel to provide transportation services to our family members whom were affected by the recent earthquake in Port Vila.
“Responding to human needs in such natural disasters is one of ACOM’s priority goals under its mission statement,” Mr. Siba stated.
“With the support of our mission partners abroad and within Vanuatu, we are proud to have effectively addressed the urgent needs of our affected families.”
Mr. Tumukon praised ACoM for its leadership in disaster response, highlighting the collaborative efforts that have made this local initiative the largest of its kind received during the crisis.
“Our heartfelt gratitude goes to all who have stood with us during this challenging time,” he said, emphasizing the importance of community and faith during such emergencies.
He also expressed thanks to ACoM for its ongoing support and for the dedication shown by the captain and crew of the Southern Cross, who have made significant sacrifices to ensure the success of the mission.
MV Southern Cross will return to the Solomon Islands early this week.
