“Thank you from our hearts! to Malaysians, Chinese and local Chinese in Solomon Islands”
The National Referral Hospital (NRH) is once again overwhelmed with the kind and generous hearts of Malaysians, Chinese and local Chinese men and women in Solomon Islands who this week donated to the hospital a total of 90 beds, 50 medical beds for sick patients and 30 folded beds for caregivers.
In a simple yet touching handing over ceremony, Mr. Michael Leong owner and Managing Director of Pacific Casino Hotel in Honiara said that the donation was a combined effort of 100 plus Malaysians, Chinese and local Chinese who together mobilized the funds that enabled the group to purchase the beds for the hospital.
“The giving is our way of showing great appreciation for the important work that our doctors and nurses are doing in caring for our sick people and also to demonstrate to them and our people that whatever challenges and issues, for instance this COVID-19 pandemic that we face, we are all in it together”, explained Mr. Leong.
He also acknowledges and thanked Mr. James Fangs, a local Chinese businessman for the wonderful work in coordinating the group, mobilizing funds and moving the supplies to Honiara.
The same group also donated 300 20kilogram bags of rice to the NRH that was used in both 1st and 2nd wave of COVID-19 for staff welfare and patient meals. Following mass testing at NRH where more than half of the medical staff tested positive for COVID-19, Mr James Fangs also offered up one of his homes in Honiara for the staff to reside in until they returned to negative.
This was all done for free with all costs for electricity, water bills, linens etc were provided by Mr. Fangs and the group.
NRH Medical Superintendent Dr Janella Solomon who received the items on behalf of the hospital said that words cannot thank enough what the group has done for the hospital since the COVID-19 outbreak in January.
“Your support has greatly helped us to persevere through the COVID-19 storm. While the food supplies and accommodation greatly addressed staff welfare and patient care, it also comes with a deep comforting message for us, and that is we are not alone in this fight against COVID-19 and service to the people”.
“Today we are once again blessed with hearts filled with joy in receiving these medical and caregiver beds. More exciting for us is that these medical beds are very advanced with their own slide table, to make it easier for when patients are eating and the easy -to -adjust height and bend of the medical beds will make it easier for our patients and caregivers to operate”, said Dr Janella.
With the caregiver beds, the Medical Superintendent said that it will enable caregivers of the sick to rest comfortably.
She advised nurses who accompany her to receive the beds to take good care of it and ensure that they remain functional as long as possible to serve the patients well into the future.
“Again sincere thank you to all the individuals from Malaysia, China and Local Chinese in Solomon Islands for this wonderful donation, thank you indeed”, concluded Dr Janella.
