Honiara, 6 September 2026 – Prime Minister Hon. Mathew Wale today held fruitful bilateral talks with the visiting U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, Mr Christopher Landau.
The discussions focused on areas of mutual interest, including the return of the U.S. Peace Corps program to Solomon Islands after more than 20 years.
Welcoming Deputy Secretary Landau, Prime Minister Wale described the visit as a demonstration of the historic and enduring partnership between Solomon Islands and the United States.
“Our relationship is built on shared history, democratic values, and strong people-to-people links,” PM Wale said.
He recalled the active presence of the Peace Corps in Solomon Islands during the 1990s, where volunteers served in local communities and rural villages in education, health, and sports.
“The return of the Peace Corps will revive fond memories of that partnership and further strengthen cooperation between our two countries,” the Prime Minister said.
The two leaders also discussed Solomon Islands’ economic development priorities and areas where the United States can provide support.
Deputy Secretary Landau reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to working with Solomon Islands to advance stability, prosperity, and people-centred development in the region.
