“World Teachers day is an important day for us teachers because it is an annual opportunity where we recognize the work of teachers and how they are helping and nurturing the young people of tomorrow”, Mr. Maraitehi said.

He reminded his colleague teachers that teaching is one of the hardest however it is one of the most important jobs in the world.

Mr. Maraitehi stressed that the world teachers’ day each year has a unique theme that reflects on the teaching current and to organize the immediate need teachers currently face in their work and for 2021 world teachers day, the theme of the celebrations is ‘Teachers at the heart of education recovery’.

“For this year, because of the Covid -19 pandemic which affects the globe, the theme of the celebrations is ‘Teachers at the heart of education recovery’ and focuses on how societies can fully support teachers and contribute to the recovery process”, Mr. Reuben Maraitehi said.

“However, for Ulawa teachers, because of the COVID -19 free status, we develop our own theme which is ‘Iumi Tugeda Tijas biuldim Hiuman Risorsis’ and we choose this theme to remind us teachers of this island of the need to cooperate together to help develop our human resources”, he added.

Mr. Maraitehi says that the theme is important because our schools are supposed not to be struggling alone as it was seen in the past.

“Schools on Ulawa Island even though not far from each other have been struggling alone and this should not happen like this. Even though located on different parts around the Island, we need to work together and cooperate together as a group to educate our children as Ulawa is only a small Island”, he added.

“The development of our youths, our human resources is very important to us now than in the past thus we need to work and think seriously hand in hand to teach and instill knowledge in their brains in order to prepare them for the future as our island is small and does not have enough resources to sustain us in the near future”, Mr. Maraitehi further added.

The occasion started with a parade followed by a short awareness and short remarks from schools representatives of the schools around Ulawa and they ended the celebrations with sporting activities.
