THE Minister for the Ministry of National Planning and Development Coordination (MNPDC) continues to solidify Solomon Islands development cooperation with Japan through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) following his meeting with the visiting JICA Senior Vice President Mr Hataeda Mikio.

In the meeting on Monday, October, 21st, Minister Ramofafia expressed deep appreciation for JICA’s long standing partnership and contributions to Solomon Islands’ development, since independence in critical sectors such as Agriculture, Economic Infrastructure, Health, Education, Disaster Risk Management, Waste Management, Tourism and Governance, Public Finance Management and Capacity Development.

The two leaders discussed ongoing collaboration and new opportunities for support in key sectors of Solomon Islands national development strategy.

The Minister highlighted key projects such as the successful completion of the Airport Expansion Project and the Kukum Highway Phase 2 project, both essential infrastructures that supported the country’s hosting of the Pacific Games last year.

Minister Ramofafia also commended JICA’s continued support for other development initiatives, including the Public Investment Management Project, the Human Resource Development Scholarship Project valued at 149 million Japanese Yen, and the $SBD 120 million Kilu’ufi Hospital Improvement Project. In connection with the Kilu’ufi Hospital Project, JICA indicated that they will also be securing resources to provide equipment for the hospital.

He emphasized the alignment of JICA’s work with four key objectives of the National Development Strategy (NDS), highlighting the importance of this alignment in driving sustainable growth for the Solomon Islands.

During the meeting, Hon. Ramofafia sought additional support from JICA in priority areas. Among the key requests was funding for the Bina Harbour Tuna Processing Plant, with a specific focus on securing financial backing for water and power infrastructure, valued at an estimated US$40.3 million. Mr. Mikio informed Minister Ramofafia that JICA is reviewing the interim business case for Bina Harbour Tuna Processing Plant, and JICA is honoured to have been requested to consider the project.

In addition, the Minister sought JICA’s assistance for budget support linked to the development budget over the next four years (2025-2028).

The discussion between Minister Ramofafia and Mr. Hataeda underscored the strong and evolving relationship between the Solomon Islands and Japan through JICA.

Both parties expressed optimism for continued cooperation, reinforcing their shared commitment to the sustainable development and prosperity of the Solomon Islands.
