Youth from Radefasu and Talakali communities in Aoke/Langalanga constituency, Malaita Province celebrated a proud moment after completing a two-month leadership and life-skills training program. The graduation ceremony was held at Talakali community and brought smiles to parents, leaders, and the young graduates.
The program, called the Future Leaders Club, is an after-school initiative that helps young people build confidence, learn life skills, and become positive role models. It is funded by UNICEF and carried out by World Vision Solomon Islands with support from the Malaita Youth Council.
Malaita Provincial Youth Coordinator Frank Samo attended as guest of honour. He praised the youths for their commitment and growth. “You have shown discipline and courage,” Samo said. “What you learned here can help you build a better future for yourselves and your communities.”

Eight mentors from the Malaita Youth Council guided the youths through group discussions, activities, mentoring sessions, and reflections. The program used a four-to-one ratio, allowing mentors to give close support. “We walked closely with each young person,” said one mentor. “We saw confidence grow week by week.”
The Future Leaders Club focuses on building strong mentor-youth relationships, encouraging positive behaviour, supporting personal growth, and promoting peaceful and united communities. A key message of the training is for youths to move away from harmful actions and choose positive paths.
Parents and community leaders shared positive feedback during the ceremony. “My child is more respectful and confident now,” one parent said. “This program has changed our home.”

Graduates were encouraged to continue using their new skills. As Samo reminded them, “Leadership starts with the choices you make every day.”
