The Solomon Islands Government through the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development (MEHRD) is ready to commit and support education infrastructure development at the state-owned Waimapuru National Secondary School starting for 2027 and beyond.
Minister of Education, Hon. Stephen Kumi made the announcement on Wednesday 21 October 2026 when delivering the keynote address at the school’s graduation ceremony.
The Minister informed the Waimapuru school community in Makira/Ulawa Province that the 2027 Solomon Islands Government Development Budget, under the Schools Infrastructure Development Budget Programme, includes a package of 14 infrastructure projects for Waimapuru NSS.
“This is an important commitment towards improving the learning and living environment for students and staff at the school,” Minister Kumi said.
The 14 education infrastructure projects include a water supply system and the rehabilitation of five dormitories, three classrooms and five staff houses.
These investments aim to improve access to safe water, student accommodation, classrooms and staff housing.
“Implementation must follow approved government budget, procurement and project-management processes,” Minister Kumi said.
“MEHRD, through the Permanent Secretary and relevant Education Providers, will work with the appropriate authorities and school leaders to ensure effective coordination, monitoring and accountability,” he added.
Minister Kumi also encourages the School Principal, teachers, students, School Board, MEHRD as the education provider, the Makira-Ulawa and Temotu Provincial Governments, and the wider community to work together to protect these facilities once completed, report maintenance needs early, and ensure that the infrastructure is used responsibly and maintained for the benefit of current and future students and teachers.
In addition to infrastructure support, MEHRD also reiterates its commitment to support professional development for schools in Solomon Islands.
“Infrastructure alone cannot improve learning. Waimapuru also needs adequate teachers, subject coverage and professional development.
“MEHRD, through the Permanent Secretary and relevant technical and provincial officers, will coordinate oversight and respond to identified needs. I encourage school leaders to document staffing, training and student-support priorities and submit them through the appropriate MEHRD channels for consideration,” Minister Kumi said.
In 2027, MEHRD will introduce a new structure to ensure efficiency and increased support to Provincial Education Providers’ offices and provincial-based private and Church Education Providers.
This aims to strengthen oversight of Waimapuru NSS, provincial coordination and access to MEHRD’s technical support.
