Women from Ranadi area in east Honiara are calling out to the public to take responsibility to look after their own rubbish in and around the Honiara City.
This is a concern from Kalmah David one of the mothers residing in Ranadi area who is among the women who have joined a community Access and Urban Services Enhancement project under Honiara City Council and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Development (MID).
Kalmah speaking on behalf of the women in the Ranadi area said rubbish has been the main issue in our town and that they want all people to take the responsibility to look after their own rubbish.
The group of seven women are currently undergoing a street cleaning project after completing an Infrastructure & Service Delivery Training (ISDT) last month. They are to work six hours a day for twenty days from Tanakake road to Woodford School.
Kalmah said trying to keep the roadside clean is a challenge.
“We saw that people are not responsible for their own rubbishes, sometimes when we comeback after a few hours from where we have left already clean, we saw new rubbishes scattered along the road side, which is very and annoying and bad,’ she said.
“We also saw that the area that we worked in was very dirty especially filled with plastics bags. We were supposed to work only 6 hours but instead we decided to work an extra hour to complete our job thoroughly,” she added.
The concerned mother asks the public to help work together to maintain cleanliness in the township.
“My call to the public is to work together with us to help keep our town clean by throwing our rubbish in its proper place. This is very important because when we have visitors from other countries coming into our country, they will see that Honiara too is a clean town so please let us all work together by being responsible for our own rubbish and to maintain the cleanliness in our streets,” she urged.
