SOLOMON Islands Governor General said the country’s economy is yet to fully recover from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sir David Vunagi reminded the nation in his official speech to mark the 74th Birthday of His Majesty King Charles III on Friday.

He said the COVID-19 result had a significant detrimental impact on our resources and the social and economic fabric of the nation.

“The impacts of COVID-19 have not yet been completely reversed in the social and reproductive sectors.

“The high cost of living and low wages make it hard for people to make ends meet.

“Such financial hardships, have influenced people to compromise their integrity and engage in corrupt activities,” Sir Vunagi noted.

He cited that there have been 153 fatalities and a total of 21,611 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Solomon Islands from 3 January 2020 to 31st May 2023, with 153 fatalities.

“We pray for the souls of all of our loved ones who passed away during COVID-19 as a nation. May they rise in glory and find peace,” Sir Vunagi said.
