THE election for the 11th provincial premier for the Makira/Ulawa province is confirmed to take place on Friday, the 3rd of May, in Kirakira, the provincial headquarters.

The Clerk to the Makira/Ulawa Provincial Assembly, Mr. Clement Rohorua, said that nominations for the Premier’s post will be declared after the election for the new Speaker, which will take place today (Wednesday).

Mr. Rohorua says that on Monday, all elected members of the Makira/Ulawa Provincial Assembly took their oaths and also the made the declaration of the opening for nominations for the Speaker’s post, which closed at 4 p.m. yesterday.

“The election for the Speaker’s position for the 11th Assembly of the Makira/Ulawa province will convene today (Wednesday), and the new Speaker will then make the formal announcement for the nominations for the Premier’s Election, which will be held on Friday, May 3rd,” the Clerk said.

He adds that after the Premier’s election, the Premier will then be given time to appoint his executive, and the newly appointed executive members will take their oaths on Monday, 6th, next week, and after that, nominations for the deputy Speaker’s post will be declared open.

“After successfully electing the new Premier for the 11th Assembly of the Makira/Ulawa Province on Friday, we will then allow time for the Premier to appoint his executive members, and they will take their oaths on Monday next week, followed by the declaration of the nominations for the Deputy Speaker’s post.

“The elections for the Deputy Speaker’s post will then take place on Tuesday 7 May, and that should conclude the establishment of the 11th Makira Ulawa Provincial Assembly,” the Clerk added.

Only six former MPA’s have been re-elected in the joint elections out of the 20 wards in Makira/Ulawa Province; the rest were new members.
