THE International Education Day 2025 was celebrated today at King George School Hall in Honiara, highlighting the transformative power of education in the age of AI.
The theme for this year’s celebration, “Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Education, Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation,” resonated deeply with students and educators alike, emphasizing the critical role AI will play in reshaping classrooms and teaching methods across the globe.
Hon. Tozen Leokana, Minister for Education and Human Resources Development, spoke passionately about how AI is already changing the landscape of education. “AI is not just a future concept; it’s here, and it’s reshaping the way we teach and learn,” said Leokana.
He highlighted the potential of AI to create personalized learning paths, adaptive to each student’s pace, and to provide real-time feedback through intelligent tutoring systems. These advancements are making education more inclusive and effective, helping to bridge gaps for students who may have previously been left behind.

The event, attended by students from White River Community High School, Woodford International School, and Selwyn College, offered a platform for discussion on how education can help communities understand and navigate the ever-growing influence of technology. It was a reminder that, while AI may dominate classrooms, the human element—teacher-student relationships and personal growth—must remain at the heart of education.
The celebration also showcased achievements in the education sector, with panel discussions providing insights on how schools, institutions, and stakeholders are preparing for the future of education.
For many students and educators in attendance, it was a hopeful moment—a glimpse into a world where technology and human agency can work together to empower the next generation.
