In a major boost to digital learning, the Governments of Australia and New Zealand have donated 165 laptops to eleven schools across Malaita and Temotu Provinces.
The laptops were delivered in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development (MEHRD) through the Education Sector Support Program (ESSP). This initiative is part of a broader commitment to expand access to quality education and close the digital divide for students in remote and underserved communities.
“These laptops are essential tools to prepare young Solomon Islanders for a digital future,” said acting Australian High Commissioner Andrew Schloeffel.
“Australia is proud to stand alongside MEHRD and our New Zealand partners in supporting the next generation of learners.”
New Zealand High Commissioner His Excellency Jonathan Curr said, “Access to digital tools empowers students to explore, research, and connect with the world. We’re proud to help bring this opportunity to classrooms in Malaita and Temotu.”
Each of the eleven schools received 15 laptops to equip their computer labs, giving students and teachers reliable access to modern technology. The laptops come pre-loaded with curriculum materials and include video tutorials on Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint — ensuring teachers can confidently integrate digital learning into their classrooms.
This rollout is part of a larger ESSP initiative, in collaboration with NGO Litehaus International, which is delivering a total of 450 laptops to 30 schools across Malaita, Temotu, and Guadalcanal.
In Malaita Province, the recipient schools are Faurere and Fo’ondo Community High Schools in the northern region, Busurata Community High School in the highlands of Central Kwara’ae, Gwaidingale, Laulana and Auki Community High Schools.
Chief Education Officer for Malaita Province, Mr Andy Siarani, expressed deep appreciation, saying “This donation reflects a strong commitment by the Governments of Australia and New Zealand to fostering quality education and a culture of learning. These laptops will transform the digital learning environment for our students and teachers.”
Recipient schools in Malaita include Faurere, Fo’ondo, Busurata, Gwaidingale, Laulana, and Auki Community High Schools. In Temotu,recipient schools include Lata, Monene, Balipa’a, Gauwa, and Bishop Patterson Community High Schools.
To support the rollout, Litehaus International hosted a teacher training workshop in Honiara, equipping educators with the skills to use and teach digital tools effectively. For those unable to attend, video tutorials ensure no teacher is left behind.
This investment in digital infrastructure marks a critical step toward long-term educational transformation in Solomon Islands — empowering students, strengthening communities, and building a future where every child has the tools to thrive.
