AUSTRALIA is proud to support an oral history project to enable Solomon Islanders to share their stories about the country’s WWII and Independence history.
The project, Wol Wo Tu an Indipendens: Stori Blo Mifala, will see Solomon Islanders interviewed about these significant events, and their stories recorded.
It will aim to ensure that Solomon Islands’ rich history and culture is maintained and available to be shared with future generations – and importantly ensure that Solomon Islands voices are telling Solomon Islands stories.
Australia is supporting a two-day workshop, organised by the Solomon Islands National University, representatives from Deakin University and the Australian National University, to be held in Honiara 11 – 12 September.
The workshop will bring together academics, historians, students and civil society to discuss stakeholder consultations, research methods, research ethics and ideas for the next project phase.
Australia supported the attendance of two representatives from Papua New Guinea (PNG), Mr Keimelo Gima and Mr Javith Abavu, who were involved in a similar project to record history in their home country.
The PNG participants were able to share invaluable insights, reflections and lessons learned.
Australian High Commissioner to Solomon Islands, His Excellency Rod Hilton, said Australia recognises that WWII and the country’s transition to Independence are significant periods in Solomon Islands’ history.
“Wol Wo Tu an Indipendens: Stori Blo Mifala, is about making sure Solomon Islands history is told from the perspective of Solomon Islanders,” High Commissioner Hilton said.
“We hope this project will also provide an opportunity to bring together Solomon Islanders from across the country to reflect on their shared experiences and history.”
