PEOPLE on Ulawa Island in the Makira Ulawa province has taken the Covid19 outbreak on ulawa into another level by blocking off public access roads.
This happened after the first cases of Covid19 circulated in nearby communities of Taheramo Rural Health Centre in the North Ulawa Ward.
Witnesses claimed that one village, Sihongai’e, which is a small community with four households on Sunday has blocked off the main road to prevent people and vehicles from travelling by cutting down trees and putting large stones as blockades.
Another similar blockade happened at Pahuwesi, where some people also blocked off the access road which people use as access roads to gardens.
This has caused anger to road users, especially those that have food gardens in the Pahuwesi area of Haraina saying that such actions only shows how stupid some people are as by blocking these access roads will only make people angry and can create further problems.
One mother of three whose food garden was in the area blocked off , who wish to remain anonymous says that blockade had prevented her from going to her garden to get food for her family.
“This blockade has prevented me from reaching my food garden to get food for my family”, she says.
“That road is a public road that people use and since our food gardens are situated there and now that people residing at Pahuwesi have closed the road, where are we going to get food from?” the concerned mother adds.
The concerned mother says that at times like this, people should not do such unacceptable activities as such things will only cause further problems for people in the communities.
In another incident that occurred yesterday afternoon, a couple who went to another village to look for anyone selling root crops say they were being threatened by one of the men there telling them to turn back or he will shoot them with a piece of wire metal.
Ulawa Island recorded its first case of Covid19 on Saturday 26th February 2022 upon the visit from a health vaccination team from Kirakira.
