Officers of the Correctional Service of Solomon Islands (CSSI) have successfully completed a week-long Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) training held at the Correctional Service Training Academy (CSTA) in Rove, Honiara.
The training, facilitated by the staff of the Correctional Service Training Academy, aimed to strengthen the leadership and management capabilities of in-charges and supervisors. It focused on developing essential leadership qualities to effectively guide teams in both on-the-job training and operational duties.
Over the five-day program, participants covered key areas including:
- Change Management
- Code of Conduct
- Communication and Delegation
- Goal Setting
- Leadership and Management
- Problem Solving
- Report Writing
- Self-Awareness and Self-Development
- Staff Discipline and Morale
- Performance Management
- Supervision and Team Building
- Time Management
- Workplace Harassment
- Job Description Awareness
- Foot Drills
Speaking at the official closing of the course, Assistant Commissioner Corporate Services, Mrs. Needy Topue, congratulated the officers on completing the course, describing it as a significant milestone in their professional development.
“I am confident that this course has equipped you with essential skills in leadership, teamwork, decision-making, communication, and strategic awareness — skills that are crucial for guiding subordinate officers and contributing effectively to CSSI operations,”
Mrs. Topue said. “More importantly, it has strengthened your ability to lead with integrity, fairness, and discipline.”
She reminded participants that as middle managers, they play a vital role in bridging the gap between frontline officers and senior leadership. “You are expected to guide your teams, set good examples, and uphold the standards of the correctional service. The knowledge you have gained here is not just about managing people and tasks — it also comes with responsibility, accountability, and respect”.
Mrs. Topue encouraged the NCOs to apply what they have learned with confidence and humility. “True leadership is not about authority, but about service — service to your team, to this organisation, and to the community we serve,” she said.
She further reminded officers that the ranks they now wear are symbols of discipline and professionalism. “You must lead by example, communicate effectively with inmates, colleagues, and senior officers, and always fulfil your duties faithfully. Let this be the beginning of a renewed commitment to the standards and expectations of CSSI. Continue learning, leading, and inspiring others through your actions. Together, we can build a correctional service that is professional, humane, and progressive.”
On behalf of the Office of the Commissioner and Executive, Assistant Commissioner Topue extended appreciation to the Director and staff of the Correctional Service Training Academy for successfully facilitating the course.
“Congratulations to all recipients on your achievements. I wish you every success in your future roles,” she concluded.
