Minister of Finance and Treasury Honourable Rexon Ramofafia has congratulated graduates of the Professional Diploma of Accounting, describing their achievement as a strong contribution to national development and nation building.

He delivered the keynote address at the graduation ceremony held at Heritage Park Hotel, attended by graduates, families, lecturers, and partners.

In his opening remarks, the Minister thanked all graduates for successfully completing the demanding learning program. He acknowledged the many challenges they faced along the way, including balancing work, family, and studies.

Minister of Finance and Treasury Honourable Rexon Ramofafia.

“Many of you have balanced work, family, and studies. This achievement reflects your discipline, perseverance, and commitment to professional growth,” Mr Ramofafia said. “Be proud of yourself, as the government is also proud of your achievements today.”

The Minister said the Professional Diploma of Accounting is more than an academic qualification. He described it as a key pillar for strengthening the country’s financial systems and supporting good governance.

“This qualification is not just an academic achievement; it is a crucial contribution to national development and nation building,” he said. “Accountants support transparency, accountability, and the proper use of public resources or public funds.”

He explained that the skills gained through the program are directly relevant to the needs of both the public and private sectors in Solomon Islands. These include financial analysis, internal control, and taxation, which are essential for sound decision-making.

Mr Ramofafia placed special emphasis on the importance of competent accounting in government ministries, provincial administrations, and state-owned enterprises. He said strong financial discipline is necessary to improve service delivery to citizens.

“Many of you work within the public sector. Your role is vital in supporting sound budgets, reliable financial reporting, and strong internal controls,” he said. “As the government continues to implement public financial management and government-to-government reforms, we rely on professionals like you.”

He added that accountants help ensure compliance with laws and policies and promote value for money in government spending. According to the Minister, this work plays a major role in building public trust and confidence in government institutions.

The Finance Minister also encouraged graduates to uphold the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and accountability in their workplaces. He urged them to continue their professional journey by joining the Institute of Solomon Islands Accountants.

“This qualification is also a pathway to professional recognition,” he said. “I encourage all graduates to become members of the Institute of Solomon Islands Accountants and commit to continuous professional development.”

He noted that professional membership strengthens credibility and aligns local accounting practices with international standards recognised by global accounting bodies.

Mr Ramofafia highlighted ongoing government efforts to strengthen financial management systems. He said the Ministry of Finance and Treasury is working closely with the Ministry of Public Service and development partners to build a comprehensive capacity-building framework.

“This framework will address critical gaps in our financial management system and establish a sustainable development pathway,” he said. “It will help build a healthy economy, especially within government ministries, while aligning with legal frameworks and international best practices.”

In his closing remarks, the Minister praised the Institute of Solomon Islands Accountants and its partners, including the Institute of Public Accountants of Australia and UNESCO, for their continued support.

“I commend the Institute of Solomon Islands Accountants and its partners for your commitment to building accounting capacity in Solomon Islands,” he said.

He also acknowledged the families, employers, and mentors who supported the graduates throughout their studies.

“Graduates, your skills are needed now,” Mr Ramofafia concluded. “Use them wisely, professionally, and in service to our country. Congratulations, and thank you for serving our people and our nation.”
