GIZO TOWN COUNCIL has stepped in to help Gizo residents with an allocation of a public space in the centre of the town for a Flea market.

A statement from Gizo Town clerk Charles Kelly said the provincial executive in their recent deliberation have reached a resolution for a possibility to close the back road near the sports field, BSP and Simeon’s Video Shop.

“Vehicles will have to use the back road and the main road for movement with the town CBD area.

“The idea came about because of several requests from the public for us to create a Flea Market for the public as an outlet to sell crafts, used products, second-hand cloths and other locally made products. Because the main market is for green vegetables, fish and root crops only, as per the market ordinance.”

He said the idea is for a trial opening once a week for a month if the venue is well used by the public. And Conditions for use of the area will be placed as soon as permission is granted like strictly there will be no betel nut sales in the area. he said a policy will be drawn.

“There are a lot of requests by the community, especially women and youths as well, to have a place to sell crafts and second-hand goods,” Kelly said.

“I put a request to the provincial executive to allocate the road to be used on a temporary base to put on trial once a week.

“I also forward copy request to Provincial Police commander and Ministry of Infrastructure Development department here in Gizo Town. We wait for a response from Police then we will begin with the trial.

“SIFF office here will be also made aware as the market will be situated in the JF Kennedy vicinity.

“Nothing will be disturbed on the closure of the road; we will use 100 meters or less of the strip of the road in the heart of Gizo town,” Gizo Town clerk Charles Kelly said.
