THE Government for National Unity and Transformation (GNUT) is working on the Revenue Sharing Bill.
This bill proposes a fairer and more equitable sharing of resources to Provinces so that they can effectively carry out their functions and provide better services to our people and communities.
As Implementation Arms of the national government, provincial governments must be equipped with adequate levels of resources to be able to deliver services to all citizens in all provinces on behalf of the national government.
In his guest of honor address at the Makira Ulawa Province’s Second Appointed Day celebration in Kirakira, Prime Minister Honorable Jeremiah Manele MP, assured the Makira Ulawa Provincial Government that the national government through the Ministry of Provincial Government and Institutional Strengthening is working on the Revenue Sharing Bill.
The Prime Minister also announced that the GNUT is planning to undertake a review of the Provincial Government Act 1997. Further revealing that it is also featured prominently in the 100 days program of the government.
PM Manele stated that the completion of the review and tabling of the draft Provincial Government Bill will provide options to consider in relation to the government systems that could be of benefit to our country.
Associated activities connected to these two policy areas are well covered in the government’s 100-day program.
Government’s primary focus is on the economic recovery. This is vital given the post-COVID- 19 pandemic and the 2021 riots and the on- going effects of the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East.
The Prime Minister also acknowledged the progress made on the Kirakira Wharf Project under the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP). Stating that once the project is completed will boost development and economic growth in the Province.
PM Manele acknowledges other potential areas of economic growth for Makira Ulawa Province such as tourism, agriculture, and fisheries.
The Prime Minister expressed GNUT’s ambition to ensure all provincial governments have sister relationships with other cities in countries we have bilateral partnership with.
PM Manele added that the Province may want to explore this opportunity as the Province has the potential to attract business and investment opportunities, people to people exchange and other areas of mutual interests.
Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele went to Kirakira, Makira Ulawa Province to participate in the Province’s 41st Second Appointed Day over the weekend (Sunday) and returned Tuesday this week.
Also accompanying the PM was the Minister of Fisheries honorable Nestor Ghiro, Minister of Agriculture and Livestock honorable Franklyn D Wasi, Minister of Health and Medical Services honorable Paulson Bosawai Popora and Minister of Provincial Government and Institutional Strengthening honorable Wyne Ghemu.
