THE inaugural National Aviation Symposium commenced yesterday at the Heritage Park Hotel, marking a significant event for the Solomon Islands aviation sector. Organized by the Ministry of Communication and Aviation.
The two-day symposium brought together key industry stakeholders to foster collaboration under the theme “Deepening Collaboration Towards a Safe, Sustainable, Integrated, and Resilient Air Transport System in Solomon Islands.”
In his opening remarks, Minister of Communication and Aviation, Hon. Frederick Kologeto, noted the government’s commitment to advancing aviation infrastructure.
“My Ministry will continue to prioritize infrastructure development in the aviation industry,” Minister Kologeto affirmed.
The Minister highlighted key projects, including the ongoing upgrades at Henderson International Airport and Munda International Airport, as well as domestic improvements at Taro, Gizo, and Seghe airports.
“These upgrades represent a significant step forward for our aviation infrastructure.
“I would like to sincerely thank the World Bank, the Government of New Zealand, and the Government of Australia for their continuous support of the Solomon Islands Government and its people in our efforts to improve the aviation industry,” he noted, expressing appreciation for the critical support from international donors.
Minister Kologeto also outlined the Ministry’s focus on provincial airport upgrades, which will continue to be a key priority. In the coming weeks, Ministry officers will initiate a program for domestic airstrip profiling to gather essential data for maintenance and future improvements.
Beyond infrastructure development, the Minister stressed the importance of institutional reform to ensure the aviation industry operates efficiently.
“Further collaboration and cooperation among all stakeholders will be necessary to develop our aviation sector in a comprehensive and sustainable manner,” he stated.
He also mentioned critical priorities such as the management of Solomon Islands’ upper airspace and the review of the Civil Aviation Act 2008.
Minister Kologeto encouraged attendees to engage in open dialogue throughout the symposium.
“I urge everyone to participate in the spirit of transparency and development under the theme of the symposium: ‘Deepening Collaboration Towards a Safe, Sustainable, Integrated, and Resilient Air Transport System in Solomon Islands.’”
The National Aviation Symposium continues today, providing a platform for stakeholders to shape the future of aviation in the Solomon Islands.
