THE Media Association Solomon Islands (MASI) conducted a one-day training workshop for local mainstream journalists to enhance their understanding of carbon trading and conservation.

The event, held yesterday at the MASI conference room in Honiara, aimed to empower local journalists with the knowledge necessary to report on the complex and increasingly important topic of carbon trading.

The workshop aimed to empower journalists by providing them with a comprehensive understanding of carbon trading mechanisms and their impact on local communities was led by PES Project Manager Lorenzo Cordeiro of the NAKAU Programme, also focused on community engagement in carbon trading initiatives, the role of carbon trading in combating climate change, and the successes of carbon trading projects in the Solomon Islands.

Participants also gained insights into forest conservation practices and the role these efforts play in sustainable development. The training helped journalists improve their ability to identify key stories, analyze challenges, and communicate effectively on environmental issues. The initiative also promoted partnership among reporters to share knowledge and best practices in environmental reporting.

MASI President Ofani Eremae highlighted the significance of the workshop, acknowledging that many journalists in the Solomon Islands have limited knowledge about carbon trading.

He noted that the vital role the media plays in educating the public on environmental matters.

“It’s crucial for us to understand what carbon trading is all about so that when we report on it, we do so accurately,” Eremae said.

MASI Vice President Lynda Seni Wate also stressed the value of the workshop, noting that the information gained would greatly enhance journalists’ ability to contribute to the media landscape.

“This is just the beginning,” she said. “And we look forward to working together for the positive development of our nation.”

The workshop, led by PES Project Manager Lorenzo Cordeiro of the NAKAU Programme, also focused on community engagement in carbon trading initiatives, the role of carbon trading in combating climate change, and the successes of carbon trading projects in the Solomon Islands.
